Smoked Mackerel Salad with Warm Potato & Beetroot

Smoked mackerel salad

This smoked mackerel and potato recipe is served with a vinaigrette dressing and a garlicky tzatziki on the side.  Beetroot matches perfectly with these ingredients and adds some bonus colour to the dish too!  It’s substantial enough to serve as a main meal.    I like to serve the potatoes still warm as this releases the garlicky aromas from the tzatziki.

  • 150 g Greek Yogurt fat free
  • 1/4 cucumber grated & squeezed dry
  • 1 clove garlic small clove, finely grated
  • A few leaves fresh mint finely chopped

Salad ingredients

  • 200 g new potatoes quartered
  • 2 handfuls mixed salad leaves
  • 4 slices cucumber halved
  • 1/4 red onion medium thinly sliced
  • 2 fillets smoked mackerel skin removed


  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp white wine vinegar
  • salt & pepper


  1. Make up the tzatziki by mixing all the ingredients and leave to rest for as long as possible for the flavours to infuse

  2. Place the new potatoes in a pan of cold water, bring up to the boil and cook for 10-15 minutes or until tender.  Remove from water and allow to cool a little while you prepare the rest of the salad

  3. Make up the vinaigrette by mixing all the ingredients

  4. Dress the salad leaves, cucumber and red onion with about half of the vinaigrette (keep the rest for another day) and arrange on the plates.  Add the new potatoes and beetroot and flake the smoke mackerel on top

  5. Serve alongside the tzatziki. 

Note that the calorie count is based on using half of the vinaigrette quantity made.   If you want to save on calories, you can lose about 65 by skipping the vinaigrette altogether and just have the tzatziki
